Back to School, Back to the Hook

A round-up of free crochet patterns for the new school year

Y'all, if there's one thing that gets me in my feelings every single year, it's the last week of July. The pools are still open, the sun's still blazing, and somehow I'm already thinking about lesson plans and classroom decor. Teacher brain doesn't know how to turn off, even in the middle of summer.

Back to school season doesn't just mean lesson plans for me. It also means a good excuse to pick up my hook. There's something about a new school year that makes me want to make things.

‍So, this week I went down a rabbit hole finding free patterns from other crochet designers around the web; the kind of projects that fit perfectly into this season, whether you're a teacher, a mom packing lunches, or just someone who wants an excuse to crochet something new. All credit and links go to the designers below; please show them some love.

Bags & Backpacks

‍ Nothing says "new school year" quite like a new bag. These range from quick weekend makes to a little more of a project.

Pencil Pouches & Cases

‍Small, fast, and a great way to use up leftover worsted weight yarn.

Hair Bows & Headbands

Perfect for spirit days, school colors, or just a cute first-day-of-school photo.

‍ ‍

Water Bottle Holders & Lunch Totes

‍Practical, quick, and genuinely useful for backpack season.‍ ‍

Teacher Gifts

Because teacher appreciation shouldn't just happen once a year — and yes, I have a soft spot for this category.

School-Themed Amigurumi

For the ones who want something a little more "aww" than practical.

‍ ‍“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.”

‍ ‍Lamentations 3:22–23

‍There's something about that verse that feels made for this time of year. A new school year, a new set of kids, a new stack of yarn; it's all just another reminder that we get to start fresh, over and over, because His mercy doesn't run out. Some days that new-morning mercy is exactly what gets me through first period.

Whatever you're making this back-to-school season- a bow, a backpack, or just a little grace for yourself as the routine kicks back in- I hope it's a good one.
