It’s Been a Busy Week: But Then There’s Emme

This week has been a full one. I didn’t get as much crocheting in as I would have liked, a few rounds on my Colors of America throw, pictures coming soon.

In the middle of a week like this, I keep coming back to the same reminder:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, but let me tell you, it’s been a busy summer so far. Trying to get “all the things” done that fall to the wayside during the school year has kept me busy. So I keep having to remind myself that rest is a good thing.

Rest looks different in different seasons. Sometimes it’s a long, quiet evening with yarn in my hands. And sometimes, a lot of times, it’s a dog who finds you on the couch and decides that’s exactly where she’s supposed to be.

Meet Emme 🐾

Y’all, I could write a whole blog just about this dog. (Don’t tempt me.)

Dog in bed

Eleven years of the best company

Her name is Emme, and I got her eleven years ago this upcoming Independence Day when she was a year old. She is a rescue, and the best decision I have ever made. Well, more like the best decision she ever made. 😁

I am one of those crazy dog moms who got a DNA test to figure out her breed. She is 50% miniature poodle, 25% Chihuahua (I know, what a combination!), and 25% mixture of so many other breeds that the DNA test couldn’t pinpoint just one. 😄 She may have some Chihuahua in her, but her personality is all poodle. She is a people pleaser (like her human momma) and wants nothing but pets and cuddles.

One of my favorite things about her is her ears. She has one poodle ear and one Chihuahua ear. Quirky. Expressive. Completely her own. Every time I look at her, I can’t help but smile.

But beyond the ears, it’s her personality that gets me every time. She is genuinely sweet. The kind of dog that just wants to be near you. After long teaching days or busy weeks like this one, that matters more than I can say.

She has been my companion through changes, hard seasons, busy years, and a whole lot of couch crochet sessions. She sits nearby while I work on projects, occasionally getting tangled in the yarn. She is the best.

A Little Grateful

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how God puts the right things in our lives at exactly the right time. Eleven years ago, I had no idea how much I’d need this little dog. I just thought she was cute. (She is very cute.) But she has been so much more than that; she has been a steady, gentle presence through a lot of different seasons.

Proverbs 12:10 says, “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal.” I read that and think, yes, but also the reverse feels true. This animal has cared for me in ways she’ll never fully understand.

I’m grateful for her. I’m grateful for the slow evenings and the yarn and the reminder that rest is not something we have to earn. It’s something we’re invited into.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

This season is a busy one. But it’s good. And the yarn will be there when things slow down, and so will Emme.

Talk soon,

Ariana 🧶
